1a. FAQ

¿What is Drip & Fresh?
Drip & Fresh, or D&F, is a complete range of fogging solutions designed to remedy various problems by dissolving water in the air.
We call mist the act of transforming water from its liquid state into a thin vapor of water in suspension.
Refresh, remove odors, provide moisture, decorate, are some of the functions that our systems provide.
In a very summary we can say that it is an outdoor climate system that will allow us to enjoy more and better our patio or terrace during the hottest months of the year as we will reduce the outside temperature.
There are two major concepts in the field of mist: Low pressure and High pressure.

Aquí encontrarás un poco más de información acerca de D&F

¿How does it work? ¿Why does it refresh?
The misting or “evaporative cooling” consists of dissolving water in the environment to achieve a drop in temperature in the air.
This process occurs spontaneously in nature. When water evaporates, the change of state from liquid phase to gaseous requires a great amount of energy, 540 calories per gram of water. This energy is released by the air that is in the environment where evaporation occurs. When yielding energy the air cools and the water vapor becomes part of the mass of air, which raises its humidity (or water vapor).
For an evaporative process to be successful, it is important that the water and air transfer surface is as large as possible.
Although it seems strange, the beginning of its operation resembles a lot of “botijo” functioning. The key is evaporation. The water inside the botijo is cold precisely for the same reason.mismo motivo.
¿Is it suitable for installation indoors?
It is not thought for it. However, it can be used indoors keeping in mind that the nozzles will wet the floor.
¿Is it used to water the plants?
It was not created for it, but YES, it does work. It must be borne in mind that the consumption of each nozzle is only 9-10 liters per hour, which is why it is very good to generate humid atmospheres very indicated in hydroponic crops, irrigation of bonsai, nurseries etc …
¿What temperature reduction will I get using it?
The reduction of temperature will depend on 3 essential factors:

  1. The degree of humidity in the environment.
  2. The outside temperature.
  3. The pressure of the supply network.

With higher temperature and lower humidity, the greater the temperature reduction. You can appreciate the relationship very well in this picture.

relacion temperatura humedad

The more pressure of the installation, the more the drops are broken when leaving the nozzles, achieving greater dissolution of the water in the air and consequently more absorption of the heat from the environment.
What is sure is that it will create a cooler and more pleasant environment.

¿What advantages does Drip & Fresh have over other brands' products?
Our system adapts to any area that we want to “air-condition”. The pipe comes in rolls, so you can use it as you need it. The accessories are automatic and of high quality. Of “remove and put” where you want / need. Easy to put. Easy to reposition or remove. It is also important to know that we offer a complete system, with everything necessary for the realization of any installation.
¿What are the basic elements of a typical installation?
We can talk about these basic elements: pipe, T connections with nozzle, the programmer operating times and the final plug. With these elements we can perform any installation, however and if we want to do things well, we will need elements to hold the pipe, elbows to organize the branches, filtration systems of particles and lime retention and pressure equipment to better water spray .
¿Do I need a pump to use D&F?
No, it is not necessary. It suffices for its operation with the pressure of the net, as long as it is at least 3,5bar. However, any installation will improve with the increase in pressure provided by our pumps.
¿How to find out the pressure of my network?
You can know the pressure of your home using the Pressure Measurement Pack reference D017
I have a water tank, can I use it with Drip & Fresh?
Absolutely NO. You must use water from the supply net for a very simple reason: the supply net is hygienically treated, using stagnant water even if it is apparently clean, it would be a possible source of  Legionella infections.
I am using your filters to prevent the nozzles from getting stuck ¿ how often do I have to change it?
The filter must be changed at least once a year. Before putting the installation back into operation.
This is not so much because the filter has been clogged, but for a reason of hygiene since the accumulated dirt has been deposited in the same water for many months.
I already have D&F installed at home, but my installation leaks ¿how do I avoid it?
The drip in the misting systems in low pressure takes place as a result of expansion of the plastic pipe when putting in operation the system.
The water occupies a greater volume than when the pipe is without pressure so that when we stop the operation of the installation, the pipe returns to its being driven the water that had accumulated as a result of that pressure.
The solution is to insert anti-drip valves reference D100 in each nozzle and for better operation, leave one of them without a valve. Only that will be dripping all the excess water from the pipe but none of those with installed anti drip valves will leak.
Irrigation hoses can not be used in the nozzle line, as they accumulate a lot of water because they are so expansive.
Every time less water comes out of the nozzles ¿What's going on?
If every time there is less water coming out of the nozzles and apparently everything is fine, one of these 2 things (or both at the same time) may happen:
1.- The filters prior to the solenoid valve can be clogged. Solution: Clean or replace them.
2.- The nozzles have accumulated dirt and / or lime. Solution: soak them in vinegar for a few hours and rinse them with water before reinstalling them.
¿What is the difference between Drip&Fresh Domestic and the Professional?
They are VERY different systems even though the philosophy is similar: Lower the temperature.
D&F Domestic operates at low and medium pressure (between 3.5 and 14 bar), has high quality connections and pipes adapted to these pressures and the disbursement necessary for a complete installation is much less than that necessary for a professional system. The only disadvantage of not using high pressure is the necessary dripping of the nozzles.
D&F Professional requires technical knowledge for its installation, pumps that provide very high pressures, materials adapted to these pressures and a higher outlay. The great advantage of this system is that with it, we can use anti-drip nozzles.
¿Why do you recommend take water only from the net?
The water in the net is treated (chlorinated) to make it safe and suitable for consumption. In what areas may have excessive lime that can be removed with polyphosphate filters. Using stagnant water is dangerous for installation (nozzle clogging) and for the user (due to the possible proliferation of bacteria, such as legionella).
I want to put D&F on my tap but ¿what size is my thread?
¿How much do the nozzles consume?
The consumptions of the nozzles are reflected in these tables:

¿How much water does a installation consume?
An average installation of 10 standard nozzles (0.3mm), at a pressure of 5 bar and considering that it will be half the time running and half the time stopped, would spend 12.5 liters per hour.
I have an installation with 6 bar ¿How many nozzles can I use?
The number of nozzles or the SIZE of the installation always depend on the pressure and the flow provided by your water net as well as the distribution piping.

For a direct installation of the net, it is possible to reach 70 nozzles in the same installation, but it will only be testing how you can determine how many nozzles we can install without reducing the quality of your spraying.

2A. FAQ

How the misting system works
A line of D&F nozzles generates a mist curtain that produces cooling by evaporation. Evaporative cooling is a simple but effective method, where water requires calories to evaporate, so it takes 600 calories of heat per gram of water that it incorporates into the air. The surrounding air is cooler as more water evaporates.
In the optimal conditions of temperature and relative humidity, we can reduce the ambient temperature to 12ºC.
Evaporative cooling is a process that has existed since ancient times in our daily life. The botijo, the pitcher, the fountains, the sensation on the seashore and even the phenomenon of sweating, are all exponents of evaporative cooling.

Esquema botijos

High pressure applications
The D&F high pressure fogging equipment works with a maximum working pressure of 70 bar, thus achieving a finer mist with droplets up to 5 μm evaporating faster to lower the temperature without dripping and wet effects.
The high pressure D&F systems have mainly residential use, leisure, hospitality, irrigation, trade, warehouses, greenhouses, dust removal, scare off insects, energy efficiency …
Basic elements that I need for my installation
Depending on the surface to be heated and the use, the needs of the system will vary, we can talk about these basic elements: pressure equipment with programmer, pipe, nozzle holder and nozzles. With these elements we can make any installation, however depending on our installation we will need elements to hold the pipe, elbows to organize the branches, filtering systems …
What is the ideal height to install the system
For optimal cooling the height to install a system is about 2,5 to 3 meters from the ground. At higher altitudes the benefit of cooling is reduced, and the lower the risk of feeling the non-evaporated water.
How far must there be between nozzles to get the best effect
Between 75 cm and 1 m is the standard distance for high pressure systems. Less distance produces superposition of the jets causing condensation and reducing the possibility of maximum cooling. Greater distance produces untreated areas reducing the effectiveness of the system.

Esquema distancia entre toberas

Filtering systems
The D&F filters filter the water eliminating the solid impurities and the lime before it passes through the pressure pump, prolonging its operation and the useful life of the nebulizers.
¿Is an automatic discharge valve necessary?
It is highly recommended to use a drain valve in all installations to eliminate pressure and drain the water from the installation when it is not in operation, eliminating the risk of Legionella, dripping and filling the nozzles by the inlay of minerals.
Dripping nozzles
The dripping of the nozzles during the shutdowns is due to particle sealing or degradation of the rubber seat of the nozzles. The solution is to open the nozzle and clean the inner parts, especially the rubber gasket, or replace it if necessary.
Legionella
Legionellosis is a type of bacterial disease of environment. The evaporative cooling devices that spray water are classified as facilities with less probability of proliferation and dispersion of the legionella, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in RD 865/2003, of July 4.
Drip and fresh adapts and proposes a series of measures that serve as preventive actions against Legionella:

  • We work with water directly from the supply network.
  • There are no reservoirs or reservoirs of water.
  • Ultraviolet lamp that purifies and disinfects the water to be nebulized.
  • Drain pipes every time you start and for the system, leaving all pipes and nozzles clean of water.

The establishment is responsible for adopting a series of hygienic-sanitary preventive maintenance tasks and programs appropriate to their characteristics.
* Circular ANECPLA

¿How much water does the system use?
The generation of micro droplets of water allows its rapid evaporation, minimizing water consumption. D&F systems are very efficient in water consumption, using less than 5 lph for each spray nozzle running on high pressure lines. The total consumption is a direct relation of the number of nozzles used in the system.
¿What maintenance does the system require?
Very little maintenance is required. Just clean the mist nozzles and ensure the proper functioning of the filters and drain valves. The nozzles can be easily disassembled and replaced by plugs during periods of non-use. The oil in the pressure pump must be changed every 1000 hours of use.

4. VARIOUS
Suggestions and tips to carry out a low pressure installation successfully
1.-Use only water from the supply network
2.- I placed the line of misting nozzles surrounding the zone to be refreshed. You will get a refreshing curtain that will insulate the external heat from the refrigerated interior.
3.-Place the “Te” nozzle holder in the tube, separated from each other by 70 – 90 cm. and placing the tube at a height of 3 meters from the floor preferably. Install anti-drip valves. They are not essential but avoid annoying drips between operating times.
4.- The misting system requires that the supply water comes without impurities since the misting nozzles have an extremely fine passage. Install a filtration system.
5.- Make sure that the tube with the “Te” is level, it will minimize the drip between intervals.
6.- If you have electrical equipment, programmer, pressure pump, etc., place them under cover, where they do not get the sun or water and collect them in winter. Frost can harm them.
7.- Before testing the installation and placing the nozzles, remove the final plug and allow water to escape from the end of the pipe to clean it of impurities. Then put the final plug and check that water comes out for each and every one of the “Te”. Close the tap and tap the spray nozzles on the “Te” with your hand.
8.-You can automate the installation by means of a programmer of on and off times. This will allow you to choose at will the seconds of ignition and rest of the installation.
9.-The optimal operation occurs with a water pressure of between 3.5 and 14 Bar. The better the more pressure. If the pressure of your water network is less than 3.5 Bar and you want to improve the result of the mist, you can easily increase the pressure by acquiring the pumps with timer.
Frequent breakdowns
These systems are very simple and effective so the only faults can be the following:
1.- Obstruction of the nozzles by particles coming from the water net.
Solution: Install a filter for suspended particles. See here
2.- Obstruction of the nozzles by accumulated lime.
Solution: Try to recover the nozzle by immersing it in a mixture of vinegar and 50% water for one night. Install an anti-cal filter. See here
3.- When inserting the tube in the piece, it has become unusable and drips.
Solution: when inserting the pipe, the O-ring inside is rolled. Try to reposition it following the scheme. Then cleanly cut the end of the tube and wet it before inserting it back into the piece so that it does not happen again.
Legionella and mist.
According to RD 865/2003, which regulates the prevention and control of legionella, these devices are considered to be “less risky”, as are sprinkler irrigation, water pipes in a house, sources and fire protection system.
The law does not indicate actions in facilities of this type if they are not in public places.
¿What is it and how does the disease contract?
Legionellosis is a bacterial disease of environmental origin that usually presents two differentiated clinical forms: lung infection or Legionnaires’ disease, characterized by pneumonia with high fever, and the non-pneumonic form, known as Pontiac fever, which manifests as an acute febrile syndrome with a slight prognosis.
Legionella is a bacterium that is capable of surviving in a wide range of physical and chemical conditions, multiplying between 20° and 45° C and destroying at 70° C. The optimum temperature for its growth is between 35º and 37° C. Its natural ecological niche is surface water, such as lakes, rivers, ponds, forming part of its bacterial flora. From these natural reservoirs the bacteria can colonize the supply systems of the cities and, through the water distribution net, it is incorporated into the sanitary water systems.
In some cases, in these facilities, poorly designed, without maintenance or inadequate maintenance, the stagnation of water and the accumulation of nutrient products of the bacteria, such as sludge, organic matter, corrosion and amoebas, forming a biolayer are favored. The presence of this biofilm, together with a favorable temperature, explains the multiplication of Legionella to infecting concentrations for humans. If an aerosol-producing mechanism exists in the installation, the bacteria can be dispersed into the air. With this, the water droplets that contain the bacteria can remain suspended in the air and penetrate by inhalation into the respiratory system. Contaminated the disease to everyone who inhales them.
Extract from RD 865/2003, of July 4, establishing the hygienic-sanitary criteria for the prevention and control of legionellosis:
“The measures contained in this RD shall apply to facilities that use water in their operation, produce aerosols and are located inside or outside buildings for collective use, industrial facilities or means of transport that may be susceptible to becoming foci for the spread of the disease, during its operation, tests of service or maintenance “.
It follows that private homes are excluded, referring exclusively to facilities for collective use.
For the purposes of the matter at hand, we will make the following considerations taken from the aforementioned decree:
1.- The equipment of “evaporative cooling that pulverizes water” and the elements of “refrigeration by aerosolization, in the open air”, are cataloged as facilities with “less probability of proliferation” and dispersion of Legionella.
2.- The owners of the facilities will be responsible for complying with the provisions of this RD and for carrying out periodic maintenance programs, structural and functional improvements of the facilities, as well as the control of microbiological quality and physical-chemical of the water, in order that they do not represent a risk to public health.
The hiring of an external maintenance service does not exempt the owner of the facility from its responsibility.
In the case of intake of the general water network, according to RD 140/2003, of February 7, the municipalities are responsible for ensuring that the water supplied through any distribution network, cistern or mobile deposit in its scope territorial is suitable for consumption at the point of delivery to the consumer.
3.- Preventive measures: general principles.
The elimination or reduction of dirty areas by means of a good design and the maintenance of the facilities and secondly avoiding the conditions that favor the survival and multiplication of Legionella, by means of the control of the temperature of the water and the continuous disinfection of it.
We understand that it refers to when the water supply is made from a well, cistern, pond, etc …
ATTENTION: The use of water that does not come from a public or private distribution net will require the mandatory administrative concession of use of the resource, issued by the competent authority in the field of management of the public hydraulic domain. In addition to the disinfection and prevention measures provided for in the RD.
The RD says for installations made from the net:
Hygiene-sanitary maintenance programs appropriate to their characteristics will be developed and applied, and will include the hydraulic operation diagram and the revision of all parts of the installation to ensure its correct operation. Maintenance programs that include at least cleaning and, if applicable, disinfecting the installation will be applied. The tasks performed should be recorded in the maintenance record. In our opinion, a level installation should be made with a slight drop to install an electric valve for automatic emptying of the installation after each day of operation. With this we ensure that there are no reservoirs of water in the pipes and therefore keep the legionella away.
